I took The Deen Bros. Cookbook — Recipes from the Road out of the library a week ago and I have already made 3 recipes from it and want to make about 10 more! I especially like this cookbook because the ingredients list does not seem to excessive.
This pizza recipe turned out great! I made a few adjustments so I could use ingredients I had on hand instead heading out to the grocery store. It seems kind of weird with the whole pizza crust going over the edge of a cake pan, but it’s a fun twist on your normal pizza. Try it, you’ll probably love it!
The Deen Brothers’ Deep-Dish Pizza
1 T olive oil
1 – 1lb ball frozen pizza dough, thawed (I used 1/2 of this recipe)
Large pinch of salt
1 lb mozzarella cheese, shredded (4 cups) (I used about half this amount)
1 cup tomato-basil pasta sauce (I used my homemade pizza sauce that you can find here)
1/4 lb sausage (my addition)
1 tsp dried oregano
Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Brush a 10-inch round cake pan (I used a springform pan) with 2 tsp of oil. Roll the dough into a 14-inch circle. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan, pushing it up the side and over the edge of the pan. Pinch the dough over the edge of the pan to seal it there. Brush the dough with the remaining 1 tsp oil and sprinkle with salt. Prick the dough all over with a fork. Bake about 10 minutes or until set. Remove from oven. Reduce oven temperature to 400 degrees.
Spread half the cheese over the pizza dough. Spoon the tomato sauce over the cheese (top with sausage if using). Spoon the tomato sauce over the cheese and top with remaining cheese. Sprinkle the oregano evenly over the cheese. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling (make sure sauce is also hot). let stand a few minutes before slicing.
